1. Federal Skilled Workers

Skilled workers are selected as permanent residents based on their education, work experience, knowledge of English and/or French, and other criteria that have been shown to help them become economically established in Canada.

2. Minimum Requirements

If your application is eligible for processing, you must also meet the following minimum requirements to qualify as a skilled worker:
  • You must have at least one year of continuous full-time paid work experience or the equivalent in part-time continuous employment; AND
  • Your work experience must be Skill Type O (managerial occupations) or Skill Level A (professional occupations) or B (technical occupations and skilled trades) on the Canadian National Occupational Classification list; AND
  • You must have had this experience within the last 10 years.

3. Selection Points

If you meet those minimum requirements, your application will then be processed according to the six selection factors in the skilled worker points grid. You must obtain a minimum of 67 points out of 100. The six selection factors are:
  • Your Education
  • your abilities in English and/or French, Canada's two official languages
  • your work experience
  • your age
  • whether you have arranged employment in Canada, and
  • your adaptability
You must also be able to show that you have enough money to support yourself and your dependents after you arrive in Canada.

5. Permanent Resident Status

If your application is successful, you and your family members will receive permanent resident visas. You will become permanent residents of Canada when you move to Canada within the validity of your visa(s). Some conditions will apply:
  • You will remain a permanent resident until you become a Canadian citizen, as long as you spend at least two years of each five year period in Canada.
  • You may leave and re-enter Canada as often as you wish.

6. Rights

As permanent residents, you and your family members will have the right to:
  • live, study, and work in Canada for as long as you remain permanent residents
  • To receive most social benefits that Canadian citizens receive, including health care coverage.
  • To live, work or study anywhere in Canada.
  • To protection under Canadian law and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
  • Apply for Canadian citizenship, and if granted, apply for a Canadian passport once you have been a legal permanent resident for three of the four previous years

7. Your Chosen Representative

Once you have decided to hire a representative:
  • Make sure you get a written agreement and read it before you sign. Make sure that the services are listed and that the legal fees are clearly set out.
  • If the representative has forms or documents for you to sign and if you do not understand them, make sure you have someone close to you translate for you. Make sure to get copies of any documents that are prepared for you. Any time you make a payment, get a signed receipt.

  • Make sure your representative updates you on your application on a regular basis. GIA provides monthly email update letters to all clients, even if the status of the file has not changed from month to month.
  • If you appoint a paid representative who is not a member of one of the designated bodies, your application will be returned by CIC.
Note: Remember, you are responsible for all the information in your application. It is against the law to give false or misleading information to Citizenship and Immigration Canada and you may be refused entry to Canada or even be deported after you arrive.
